"Mount Kenya Power Struggle Heats Up: Kindiki-Gachagua Clash Over Musicians Sparks Political Storm"
A significant political rift has emerged in the Mount Kenya region following a confrontation between Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua over a recent meeting involving prominent Kikuyu musicians.
On Friday, May 23, 2025, Deputy President Kindiki hosted a gathering at his Karen residence with several notable musicians from the Mount Kenya region, including Samidoh Muchoki, Karangu Muraya, Ben Githae, Jose Gatutura, DJ Fatxo, Sammy Irungu, Martin Wajanet, and Ngaruiya Junior. The meeting aimed to discuss challenges within the creative industry, particularly the influence of exploitative cartels, and to explore government interventions to support artists through policy reforms and protection of intellectual property rights.
In response, Rigathi Gachagua publicly criticized the musicians, accusing them of betraying the Mount Kenya community. He alleged that each artist received KSh50,000 for attending the meeting and called on residents to boycott their music, unfollow them on social media, and for entertainment venues to cease hosting their performances.
Deputy President Kindiki defended the meeting, stating that the artists sought government support to dismantle exploitative cartels in the creative industry and ensure fair compensation for their work. He condemned political figures who have historically misused artists for personal praise or to produce divisive music in exchange for token payments.
This clash underscores the ongoing power struggle for leadership within the Mount Kenya region, highlighting the intersection of politics and cultural influence as the 2027 general elections approach.
